KOLARS: Rob Kolar Q&A

Updated: Feb 2, 2021

KOLARS is your new favorite band that you’ve never heard before. The Los Angeles based ‘desert disco’ group composed of Rob Kolar and Lauren Brown, have been attracting a lot of attention since the release of their self-titled debut album in 2017.

Rob Kolars’ showmanship as a performer and front man is evident by the way he commands the stage, resembling a man possessed by Elvis Presley himself. While song-after-song Brown keeps the duos rhythm, ferociously pounding on her distinctive and unique drum set and simultaneously tap dancing atop a bass drum.

Rob and Lauren were recently on Saint Motel’s ‘The Motion Picture Show” tour at the Roxian Theatre in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania, when we caught up with Rob to ask him a few simple questions about his career thus far.

Q: What is your earliest memory of music?

A: “My mother grew up in Jamaica and my grandmother was from there. Our cousins would throw these Jamaican pool parties up in Topanga and they would always bump Bob Marley. He was very much the soundtrack to my childhood.”

Q: What does your connection with your audience mean to you?

A: “It’s vital. Without our fans and audiences we couldn’t survive as a band and as a business. Sure we love to do what we do regardless of what people think or whether they enjoy it but our fans bring so much life to what we do, especially at the shows.”

Q: Why is music so important in your life?

A: “It’s catharsis, it’s our livelihood, it’s how we share our lives together as a married couple and band mates and it is our means of expression and connecting with audiences.”

Q: What would you say are some qualities that every musician should possess, and why?

A: “Patience! It can take a hell of a long time to find your success.”

Q: For you personally, what defines success as a musician?

A: “Loving what you’re doing. And for us, being able to support yourself with your art without having to compromise your artistic vision.”
